Newman Hoyles married Lucretia Brown on Oct 29, 1801 at Dartmouth, England. Lucretia was baptized in St John’s on Aug 17, 1777 to parents John Brown (surgeon) & Lucretia Denning.
Newman & Lucretia Hoyles became the parents of nine children, including Sir Hugh William Hoyles (1814-1888), the first native-born prime minister and chief justice of Newfoundland.

Sacred to the Memory

Of Newman Wright Hoyles, for 30 years a resident merchant of St John's and First Colonial Treasurer of Newfoundland, Who died February 29th 1840, Aged 63 years.

Of his son Newman Wright Hoyles who perished in the Western Ocean in the year 1829, Aged 19 years.

Of his daughter Anna Brown, wife of John H.M. Cooke, who died January 12th 1839, Aged 25 years.

Of his daughter Catherine, widow of William Dickson, who died May 1850, Aged 42 years.
