2018 obituary. Ernest T. "Smokey" Bagley, Sr., 91, of Scarborough, died Dec. 14, 2018, in Scarborough. He was born in South Portland, a son of Daniel Thomas and Vera Blanche Woodward Bagley. Educated at Portland and York Beach schools, Ernest graduated from Cape Elizabeth High School in 1946. He was a member of the First Congregational Church in South Portland, where he served as a Deacon for three terms. He also served on many committees and worked the church fairs as well as being an Usher and an Usher Captain. Ernest was a member of the Eskimo Club. As a member of the Cape Elizabeth Historical Society, he was the Treasurer for seven years. He was a past member of the Cape Elizabeth Grange. Smokey was a member of the Cape Elizabeth Fire Department for 20 years where he gained his nickname. Later he worked for Edwards and Walker Hardware in Monument Square. He then worked for HCI Craftsman, where he retired in 1991. He grew up an only child but had a large extended family. His father was the eldest of ten children. On June 24, 1961, he married Carolyn "Cal" Young, of South Portland. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Cal and Smokey were married for 46 years before she passed away in 2007. Predeceased by his wife, Carolyn Young Bagley, he is survived by two children, Karen M. Chace and her husband Paul of Durham, and Ernest T. Bagley, Jr. and his wife Susan of South Portland; two grandchildren, Margaret E. Masse and her husband Nicholas of Westbrook, and Jonathan T. Bagley of South Portland. The family would like to express their deepest thanks and appreciation to the staff at Scarborough Terrace for all the care they gave during his four years there, and also to Cheri and Dick Culleton for all their love and support.
