The son of Abraham & Charlotte Frances (Ruth) Ely, he is in the 1860 census living with and/or working for butcher John Ely in Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. Butchering became his life's work. He married Sarah Zettle August 20, 1862, in Franklin County and fathered Benjamin Cook (b. 05/02/63), Anna (b. 06/??/65 - married an Eagan), Ellen (b. @1867), and Alberta (b. 08/10/68 - married William E. Shaw). He is in the 1863-65 draft registration still residing in Chambersburg and listed as "Ely."

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-eight in Chambersburg August 14, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Carlisle August 22 as a private with Co. C, 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry (160th Pennsylvania). Allegedly wounded, that has yet to be verified, but he did discharge by surgeon's certificate March 9, 1863. His obituary erroneously claims he "served the Union cause for three years," but there is no indication he served a second term of service, and he did not mention a second regiment in his disability pension application. He is in the company register and the Pennsylvania Archives' ARIAS file as "Eley."

He died at his nephew's home from "senile paralysis" with "uremia" a contributing factor. In addition to the censuses, his obituaries, death certificate, and pension index all identify him as "Ely," giving question as to the spelling used on the tombstone. He is also reported to have been born in 1831, but he is nineteen in the 1850 census, twenty-seven in the 1860 census, and thirty-five in 1870.
