Cpl McCully was killed when he stepped on an improvised explosive device while on foot patrol near the village of Nalgham, approximately 35 km west of Kandahar City. Another Canadian soldier and an Afghan interpreter were injured in the attack. They were members of the Operational Mentoring and Liaison Team (OMLT) which helps train members of the Afghan National Army in battle logistics.
He is survived by his mother Valerie McGrady and stepfather Neal Weise; father Ron and stepmother Michelle; sister Shannon, brother Daniel, and other family members.
Cpl McCully is the 55th Canadian soldier to be killed in combat in Afghanistan since 2002.
Funeral service with full military honours was held May 31, 2007 at Tweedsmuir Presbyterian Church in Orangeville.
