Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served in the Civil War as a Corporal in Company A, 6th Pennsylvania Reserves. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery during the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (July 2, 1863). His citation reads "Was 1 of 6 volunteers who charged upon a log house near Devil's Den, where a squad of the enemy's sharpshooters were sheltered, and compelled their surrender." His Medal of Honor was issued August 3, 1897. The five other 6th Pennsylvania Reserve soldiers who were awarded the Medal of Honor for this action were Thaddeus Stevens Smith, James Levi Roush, George Washington Mears, John William Hart and Wallace W. Johnson.
