Henrietta's sister Sarah Mundheim married Leopold Karpeles after meeting him while nursing him during the Civil War. Five years after they married Sarah and her third baby died in childbirth.
Henrietta, came to take care of the remaining children of Sarah and Leopold, Theresa Karpeles Taussig (1867 - 1962) and Sarah Karpeles. Henrietta and Leopold then married.
The couple had six children. The oldest boy was Herman Leopold Karpeles (1872 - 1926). The other children were , Eva May Karpeles Bachholz (1875 - 1966), Maurice John Karpeles (1878 - 1951), Dr. Simon Rufus Karpeles (1880 - 1950), Amalia Karpeles, and Lotta Karpeles (adopted)
