Boice Says Adams Took His Own Life

A 69 year old Billings man who stepped in front of a teenager's car late Friday night succeeded in taking his own life, Coroner Mel Boice said Saturday. Parris C. Adams, clothing store clerk, died of internal injuries shortly before midnight Friday in a Billings hospital where he was taken after being struck by a car driven by George Hefenieder, 18, 314 S. 35th Street. Boice said his investigation showed Adams had stepped directly into the path of Hefenieder's eastbound car as he crossed Grand Avenue in front of Baltrey's Shopping Center. Hefenieder was not held by police. "I am convinced the man wanted to end his life." Boice said, adding the former clothing store salesman had been despondent since the death of his wife last July. Mrs. Adams was killed July 21, 1961 when a car driven by her husband went out of control on the Laurel Road. She was thrown from the vehicle and died moments later from head injuries. Boice said he had not decided whether to hold an inquest. In Helena, Alex Stephenson, Montana Highway Patrol Chief, said the death of Mr. Adams would not be counted in the traffic toll if it can be definitely listed as a suicide. Mr. Adams was born October 3, 1892 in Oshtemo, Michigan, a son of Mr. and Mrs. John Q. Adams. He was married to Stella Ungles in Indianapolis, Indiana on April 24, 1942 and lived in Detroit, Michigan before moving to Billings, Montana in 1955. After coming to Billings, Montana Mr. Adams was employed as a salesman at the D. J. Cole Company and at the Hart-Allen Company Men's Store. He lived at 144 Custer Avenue. Mr. Adams is survived by a son, a daughter, three step-daughters; five grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Smith's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Parris C. Adams, a 69 year old clothing store clerk, who apparently took his own life late Friday night by stepping in front of a car on Grand Avenue will be accorded rites Tuesday. The Reverend Paul Dean Hill, pastor of Central Christian Church, will officiate for graveside committal services at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Smith's Funeral Home will direct arrangements. Mr. Adams, who lived at 144 Custer Avenue, died of internal injuries in a Billings hospital. Coroner Mel M. Boice said he does not plan to conduct an inquest. He said there is no evidence of speeding by the car which hit Mr. Adams. The elderly man was not thrown far by the impact, which might not have been fatal to a younger person, Boice theorized. Boice said earlier he was convinced Mr. Adams "wanted to end his life." His wife was killed July 21 when a car driven by Mr. Adams went out of control on the Laurel Road and Mrs. Adams was thrown from the automobile. Surviving Mr. Adams are a brother in Otsego, Michigan; three step-daughters; five step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.
