He passed away on July 18, 1982 at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center. A native of Celina, Ohio, he was named Deputy State Treasurer in 1950 and served for two years. He then served for 10 years as an adult probation officer for Maricopa County and from 1964 to 1971. He was assistant securities director for the Corporation Commission.
A resident of Arizona for more than fifty years, he began a career in law enforcement in 1929 when he went to work for the Phoenix Police Department. In 1949, he retired as a captain. In September 1981, he hosted the first annual reunion of Phoenix police officers who had served on the department when it was founded.
Mr. Mofford served on the State Athletic Commission, where he developed its rules and regulations. For more than a decade, he served on the board or directors or the State Employees Credit Union. He was a past exalted ruler of Phoenix Elks Lodge and was active in the Arizona Olympic Club and the Softball Hall of Fame.
Survivors include his wife, Caroline; children, Carolyn Cassels, Sandra Lagesse, Joanne Harmon and James; a brother nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. There was no services.
