D.W. Welch Dies; Insurance Broker

Donald W. Welch, 78, formerly of 6449 N. Manlius Road, Kirkville, died yesterday at an area nursing home.

Born in Swan Quarter, N.C., he resided in the Syracuse area most of his life. He was a prominent insurance broker affiliated with the C. H. Twitchell Agency for more than 45 years until retirement last year.

He was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church and was a trustee of the church for many years. He was a charter member and past president of the parish Holy Name Society and St. Vincent dePaul's Society. He was a fourth degree member of Council 191 K of C and long a member of the Nocturnal Adoration Society. Mr. Welch served on the board of directors of Christian Brothers Academy, St. Mary's Hospital, the House of Providence and the Catholic Charities of the Syracuse Diocese.

A 1912 graduate of CBA, he received a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Syracuse University in 1917. He was a life member of the SU Varsity Club. He played left field for the old Syracuse Stars baseball team. Mr. Welch was a lieutenant in the Army artillery during World War l. A member of the Eastwood American Legion Post he was a past member of the Eastwood Kiwanis Club.

Surviving are a son, Donald M. Welch; two daughters, Mrs. P. Richard Kane of Camillus and Mrs. Robert L. Moore of Kirkville, eight grandchildren and three nieces.

Services will be at 8:15 a.m. Saturday at Whelan Bros. Funeral Home, 366 W. Onondaga St., and at 9 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, DeWitt. Calling hours will be 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the funeral home.
