Mrs Ellen Carter, 70, widow of U.S. Senator Carter of Montana, died in Seattle Monday, 21 Nov 1932, of pneumonia. Mrs Carter had been in Seattle for an extended business visit after a pleasure trip to Alaska to visit her brother, James Galen, who was the superintendent of Mount McKinley national park.

From childhood into early adulthood, Ellen Lillian Galen bore witness to the early days of Montana. She was born on 15 April 1861 at Tumwater, Thurston, WA. The family moved to Last Chance Gulch, site of present day Helena, in 1865. Her parents, Hugh and Matilda (Gillogly) Galen were Irish immigrants who were among the early pioneers who helped to open the "Oregon county." Hugh Galen arrived in Bangor, Maine in 1845 from Ireland. From that time until his death in Helena, Montana, he sailed from New Orleans to California for the gold rush of 1849, fought Indians, owned and operated a stage/freight line, operated trading posts and stock ranches and served in the territorial legislature of Montana. He married Matilda Gillogly 23 Jun 1860 in San Francisco, CA.

Ellen married Thomas Henry Carter in St. Paul, MN on 27 Jan 1886, and they were the parents of two sons; John Galen and Hugh Thomas Carter. After Thomas was elected the first Representative to the US Congress from the state of Montana in 1889, the family moved to to the nation's capital. During her residence at Washington Mrs Carter had a reputation as one of the gracious hostesses of the city. She was also known by her great interest in works of charity. She was vice president of the Christ Child society, a member of the board of trustees of Providence Hospital, and the Children's Guardian, a municipal organization. In 1912 she was elected president of the National Federation of Catholic Women's Charitable Organizations. She was also president of the auxiliary board of Trinity college.

The Billings Gazette (Billings, MT - 24 Nov 1932) said this about Mrs. Carter. "Her life, so rich in experience, was also full of kind, personal deeds, brightened by a character molded in pioneer times, ennobled by devotion to neighbor, community, state and nation. Time was when Senator and Mrs. Carter played prominent part in the official and social life of the national capital. Their memory will remain in this state as exemplar of the fine type that laid the commonwealth's foundation."

Survived by her sister, Mrs. Thomas J. Walker, and two brothers, Judge Albert Galen of Helena, MT and James L. Galen of Cordova, Alaska, and two sons, John and Hugh in Washington, DC. Mrs Walker accompanied the body back to Washington, DC. Funeral services were held at St. Paul's Catholic church in Washington, DC on 26 Nov 1932. She was buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Pallbearers were Senator Walsh, Joseph M. Dixon, Congressman John M. Evans and Stephen J. Murphy. Members of the family present were Mr. and Mrs. John A Carter and granddaughter, Miss Mary Ellen Carter, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh T. Carter
