Monsignor Robert Gabriel “Bob” Angelle died peacefully on Friday, May 11, 2018 at Consolata Nursing Home in New Iberia. He was 86 years old.
A native of Arnaudville, Father Bob was born on August 23, 1931, the second child of six to Bryant and Marie Mistrot Angelle. As a young boy, Bob attended Mass at St. John Francis Regis Catholic Church, where he first felt a strong call to the priesthood. He was both a proud Cajun and devout Catholic. He entered the monastery at St. Joseph Abbey and obtained a B.A. in Philosophy from St. Joseph Seminary in 1953. On May 22, 1956, Father Bob was ordained as a Benedictine priest at St. Joseph Abbey. He was the first Cajun priest from Arnaudville in its 103 year history as a church parish. During his time serving as a priest for the Benedictines, Father Bob continued with his secular and religious education, earning a Bachelor’s in Education in 1957 from Loyola of the South, a Master’s in Divinity in 1958 from St. Joseph Seminary, and a Master’s in Chemistry in 1960 from Notre Dame University.
Father Bob entered the Diocese of Lafayette in 1962. After a brief assignment as Associate Pastor at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in New Iberia, Father Bob was assigned to Landry Memorial High School in Lake Charles in 1963 where he served as Math Department Head. Always eager to learn so that he could share his talents with the students at Landry High, Father Bob obtained a Master’s in Mathematics from LSU in 1964 during his tenure. He also served as Assistant Principal and Religion Teacher until he was appointed Principal in 1968. He oversaw the building and consolidation of Landry High and St. Charles Academy into the new St. Louis High School, which opened in 1970. It is now the only Roman Catholic High School in the Diocese of Lake Charles.
In December 1970, Father Bob was made a Papal Chamberlain by Pope Paul VI, and bestowed with the title of Reverend Monsignor. In 1974, Monsignor Angelle was assigned Pastor of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary in Kaplan, Louisiana, and also served as Vicar of Education for the Diocese of Lafayette. In 1975, Monsignor Angelle began serving the Diocese of Lafayette in a full time capacity, first as Vicar of Education, and later as Associate Vicar of Administrative Affairs, Acting Director of Vocations, Vicar of Administrative Affairs, and Vicar General.
After serving several years outside of the Diocese as Executive Director of Louisiana Catholic Conference and furthering his studies at Notre Dame University, Monsignor Angelle returned to the Diocese in 1987 where he was assigned to Our Lady of Fatima and then to St. Mary Mother of the Church. Monsignor Angelle retired on October 26, 1998 after ten years as pastor of St. Mary’s. Even in retirement, Monsignor Angelle remained active, presenting missions and speaking at national, regional and diocesan conferences throughout the United States.
Monsignor Angelle was a member of many professional organizations -- ecclesiastical, clerical, civic, religious and educational -- on local, state, diocesan, and national levels. He most recently served as 2015 Honorary Co-Chairman of the diocesan wide Centennial Campaign.
Monsignor Angelle was survived by his sister, Elsie Angelle Bernard, who recently passed away on Sunday, May 13, 2018. He is also survived by his sister, Peggy Angelle Gielen; two brothers, Donald Angelle and his wife, Betty, and Leonard Angelle and his wife, Mickey; numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Bryant and Marie Mistrot Angelle and one sister, Priscilla “Tina” Melancon.
Visiting hours will be observed at St. John Francis Regis Church in Arnaudville, beginning Saturday, May 19, 2018 at 9:00 AM. A Rosary will be prayed at 9:30 AM, followed by a Memorial Mass celebrated by The Most Reverend J. Douglas Deshotels, D.D., Bishop of the Diocese of Lafayette, at 11:00 AM.
Permanent placement of his cremains and urn, with his parents and his sister, Tina, will follow at St. John Francis Regis Cemetery.
