Charles Tomlin was a son of Perry Tomlin and his wife Emily Elizabeth Gill, of Iredell County. It is somewhat confusing because the family seems sometimes to have used the name Tomlin, and sometimes Tomlinson.
Charles married Jennie Vaughn Ramsay around 1881, and they had at least six children: Lily May Tomlin (1882-1949, Mrs. Durham), Pinkney Maxwell Tomlin (1886-1981, Mrs. Neely), William Herbert Tomlin (1888-1919), Samuel Stokes Tomlin (1890-1953), Charlye Leigh Tomlin (1893-1918, Mrs. Dunavant), and Joseph Irvine Tomlin (1896-1958).
