He and MCpl Allan Stewart were killed and two others injured when a roadside bomb exploded near their Coyote armoured vehicle about 38 km west of Kandahar City, Afghanistan. They were assisting another vehicle that had been struck by a roadside bomb earlier in the day; one soldier suffered only minor injuries in the earlier attack. The blasts happened two hours and 750 metres apart.
Trooper Pentland attended Oromocto High School and is remembered for his love of art, football, rugby and especially judo. He shared a great love of animals and showed his gentle side around them. Before his deployment, he also volunteered at local SPCA, visiting and walking their dogs.
He is survived by his only brother Tony; parents Jim and Gabi; maternal grandparents Dieter and Edith Joossens and Annelie and Gerhard Mueller and maternal great-grandparent Maria Niederau all of Germany; paternal grandparents, Jim and Jean Pentland of Nerepis NB; several aunts, uncles and cousins throughout Canada, the US and Germany.
Military funeral service held on April 21, 2007 at CFB Gagetown in New Brunswick.
