OBITUARY

Eliza Wilson Matteson was born at Goshen, Vermont, April 26, 1840. The early years of her life were passed in the Green Mountain state. On Jan. 2, 1860 she was married to Levi Lewis at Salsbury, VT. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis made their home at Ripton, VT., until the spring of 1866 when they moved to Genoa Bluffs, Iowa, to make for themselves a new home upon the Iowa prairies. In 1883 they moved to Ladora residing there until the year 1891, when they came to Victor.

Mrs. Lewis was the mother of six children. The oldest, a son Herbert Levi, died in infancy, the youngest, a daughter, Florence Eliza, died in 1896, in the twentieth year of her age. The other children, Carrie E. Switzer, of Ladora, Frank E. Lewis, of Victor, Beva T. Bricker, of Ladora; and Roscoe Lewis of Deep River, together with the husband, Levi Lewis, survive the departed. Mrs. Lewis also leaves to mourn her loss, one sister and two brothers, Elias H. Matteson, of Ladora, Mrs. F. G. Lewis, of Grinnell and Ford Matteson, Ripton, VT., and ten grandchildren.

The funeral services were held from the Congregational church, in Victor, on Tuesday, March 16, at two o'clock, conducted by Mrs. Lewis' former pastor Rev. C. E. Cushman of Anita. The funeral was attended by a large crowd of sympathizing friends and acquaintances. The remains were laid to rest in a beautiful family lot in the I.O.O.F. cemetery.

In early childhood, Mrs. Lewis put her trust in Christ and united with the church, and throughout all the years of her life was faithful to the duties of her church, as well as of her home. She knew well the meaning of suffering-especially during the past three months was her suffering intense, but she bore all most patiently. Rest came on Sunday morning, when at eight o'clock she fell asleep.
