Corporal, 2nd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment, based in Gagetown, New Brunswick. Age 37, he was from Sarnia, Ontario. Graduate of St. Clair Secondary School, Sarnia, York University B.A. and Ryerson University B.A.(Hons.).

Beloved son of Donald & Pat Poland of Camlachie ON, brother of Mark Poland, his wife Susan Dubé & daughter Shelley of Kitchener ON. He is also survived by extended family and his faithful and treasured companion Shorty.

Cpl Poland was one of six Canadian soldiers killed after a roadside bomb exploded near their light-armoured vehicle 75 km west of Kandahar City, Afghanistan. Four soldiers survived the attack, although one had serious injuries. They were serving with NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in a major offensive against the Taliban. It was the largest single-day combat death toll suffered by Canadian troops since the Korean War.

Recipient of Sacrifice Medal (posthumous).

Repatriation ceremony held at CFB Trenton on April 11, 2007. Full military funeral honours held on April 20, 2007 at Temple Baptist Church, Sarnia. Interment in Bear Creek Cemetery, Brigden ON.
