Colonel (then Major) Guasttella, navigator-bombarier, along with fellow crew members, pilot Lieutenant Colonel George A. Andrews and defense system operator Captain Clifford W. Youngblood, flew one of three B-58 Hustlers during Operation Greased Lightning. The October 16, 1963, operation required the planes to fly from Anderson AFB, Guam, then race 8,000 miles from Tokyo to London, and showcase the capability of the super sonic bombers of the Strategic Air Command. All three planes were based out of Bunker Hill Air Force Base, Peru, Indiana. Although another plane set the overall record that day, Guastella's crew set a Tokyo to Chicago record averaging 740 miles an hour. They set an additional record for averaging 531 miles per hour from Anchorage to Chicago flying that 2858 mile leg of the journey in 5 hours 23 minutes and 20 seconds.
