BURIAL: Burial in Madison Family Cemetery mentioned in correspondence
between Dolley Madison and Nelly Conway Madison Willis. Specifically
mentions the location as the 'family burial ground.' (Schmidt 2000).
BURIAL: Madison/Payne Family box, Greensboro Historical Society
Nelly C. Willis to Dolley Payne Madison, Orange, July 14, 1812
"Poor Billy is no more, he died on Saturday evening & yesterday his remains
were intered in the family burying ground" (Frederick Schmidt notes).
DEATH: "Your friends here all well except William Madison, whose recovery,
I am sorry to inform you - it is with grief and pain I think of it - is almost
despaired of; he is worn down to a mere skeleton, so as scarcely to be able to
ride a mile or two in a gig in a day - his bowels appear to have been the
principal seat of pain, but I fear his lungs are vitally affected" (Reynolds
Chapman to JMjr, May 24, 1812 in Stagg et.al. 1999).
