US Ambassador to New Zealand – 1961-1963 – (JFK named him)
Born in Charlotte, Texas near San Antonio – October 19, 1914, 7th of 13 children
Attended University of Texas and Columbia University Law School
Enlisted in the U.S. Navy June, 1940 – Lieutenant Commander, PT Boat (Motor Torpedo Boat) helped Gen. Douglas MacArthur evacuate from the Philippines to Australia. Awarded Silver Star and two Presidential Medals. Considered too tall at 6’4” for all three branches of the military – finally the Navy accepted him.
Helped train John F. Kennedy – WW2 PT boat captain
Technical advisor to John Ford for the 1942 movie “They were Expendable” – WW2 Navy based movie - he was one of the real officers that were fictionalized in the movie.
Served as Deputy Assistant Secretary and Deputy Under-Secretary of the Air Force during the Korean War.
Director of the New York City office of the State Department of Commerce – 1955-1958
Ran for US Congress three times unsuccessfully – 1954, 1956, and 1958
Assisted John F. Kennedy Presidential campaign - 1960
Assisted Robert F. Kennedy Presidential campaign – 1968
