GANONG, JOAN - Joan Ganong of Fredericton died on May 1, 1989 at the age of 68. She was the daughter of the late Arthur D. and Berla (Whidden) Ganong of St. Stephen, the youngest of four children, born September 7, 1920. At school she went to Grade 1 in Calais, the next year Grade 4 in St. Stephen and the third year Grade 6 in Calais when 8 years old. She then spent several years at Netherwood School for Girls at Rothesay and Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. During World War II she signed up in the Air Force and became a Flight Sergeant in Code and Cypher – having made the highest mark on her entrance questionnaire of anyone in the Air Force of the British Empire. After the War she worked in New York, and Stratford Theatre in Ontario, and later for Ed Muvich at the Alexander Theatre in Toronto and for the CBC. Miss Ganong became a freelance and press writer, and worked in England and the Continent for several years. She was a director of Ganong Bros. Ltd., St. Stephen for three years. For the last 14 years she resided in Fredericton, where she was closely associated with the Conservative Government. Miss Ganong was the sister of R. Whidden Ganong and Aunt of David A. Ganong, Gordon Ganong of Victoria, BC, and David and Peter Ganong. There was a memorial service in St. Stephen at the S.O. Mehan and Sons Funeral Home, St. Stephen, on May 8. Interment was made in the St. Stephen Rural Cemetery.
