Son of Mary (nee Stuart 1850-1881) and William C. Edgman, Sr., half brother to Pearl Searcy, step-brother of Jennie Sievers and Belle Stewart, father to Evanda, Evalda, Geraldine and Charles Jr.

Set apart for ministry by Park Church of New Albany, Indiana, he preached in Indiana for two years. He then made his way to California where he was a chaplain at the Veteran's home and minister at Yountville, he was well known throughout Napa County. It is said that he performed pantomimes and hand shilouttes (shadow puppets) to tell Bible stories. He also edited the "Christian Worker". In addition to his religious work he was engaged in the nursery business.

According to a friend of Ed's gg granddaughter his death was the result of a car accident, which has been verified by an article published in a local paper on November 1, 1911, the day of the accident. Ed had stopped his car suddenly, killing the engine, when he got out to crank up the car he accidentially left his car in gear. Once the car was cranked the motor started and the car struck him, he grabbed the radiator and tried to get his feet out from under the car, but the car ran up onto the sidewalk and crashed into a telegraph pole, trapping Ed between the two. There were many witnesses to the horrid accident, including Tal Godwin who pulled Ed out and onto the sidewalk, a few moments before death claimed him.
