Regina Mary DeKesel was born in Wyandotte County and lived there most of her life.
She married the love of her life, William Patrick Malay on 19 Dec 1908. He died in 1934 from a heart attack. She was left alone to raise her children. There was never enough money to go around, but she did the best she could. Later in life she remarried, to her daughter Nell's father-in-law, Wade Hampton Hoyes on 7 Sep 1955. Nell told the story of Regina calling her and Paul saying that she wanted to come home because she didn't like living with Wade. She packed up and moved back home. Although they stayed married because of Regina's strong Catholic beliefs, they only lived together a few months. Regins lived with Nell and Paul until she went into a nursing home prior to her death in 1970.
According to Nell, her mom (Regina) came home one day and told everyone to call her Rose! No one knows why, but from then on she was called Rose or Rosemary or Rose Mary. Even on her death certificate she is listed as Rose Mary Malay Hoyes. Even though her legal name was Hoyes, she was still known to most people by Malay.
