David Friedman , 87, of Woodland Terrace,Providence died Monday, April 13, 2009 at Miriam Hospital surrounded by his family and dearest friends. He was the beloved husband of Frances (Roy) Friedman for 64 years. He was the son of the late Benjamin and Rebecca (Leibowitz) Friedman . Born in New York City, he was a lifelong resident of Providence.

Friedman , a national leader in the restaurant supply industry, was Chairman of Paramount Restaurant Supply Corp. and Monarch Industries, Inc., and was also involved in several other business ventures. David was a WWII Army veteran, serving domestically in the Signal Corps, until his discharge.

He was universally respected for his creative vision and business acumen and was the driving force behind the creation of the Culinary School at Johnson and Wales University where he served as a Legacy Trustee for over 30 years. He was a member of Temple Beth-El and Temple Emanu-El of Providence and was a former board member of the Jewish Federation of RI and Miriam Hospital.

Devoted father of Diane Ducoff and her husband, Dr. Robert, of Providence and the late Larry Friedman and his surviving wife, Marilyn Friedman Shealey of Providence. Adored Uncle of Karen Ostrowsky and her husband Howard of Warwick. Dear brother of Murray Friedman of Florida and the late Saul Friedman and Jean Haas. Loving grandfather of Michelle Miller and her husband, Andrew, Patti Albert and her husband, Benjamin, Lynn Belkin and her husband, Matthew, Michael Friedman and his wife, Lauri, Mark and Leslie Friedman , and Louis and Danielle Ostrowsky. Treasured great-grandfather of Sydney and Adam Miller, Ysabel Albert and Matthew and Eric Friedman . Cherished uncle of many devoted nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held TODAY, Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. at Temple Beth-El, 70 Orchard Ave., Providence. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Johnson & Wales University, David Friedman Scholarship Fund, 8 Abbott Park Place, Providence, RI 02903 or Jewish Federation of RI, 130 Sessions St., Providence, RI 02906 or Temple Beth-El, Frances and David Friedman Fund, 70 Orchard Ave., Providence, RI 02906. Shiva will be observed at the home of Diane and Robert Ducoff, 75 Loring Ave., Providence, Wed. 7-9, Thurs. 2-4 & 7-9 and Fri. 1-4 p.m. Arrangements by Shalom Memorial Chapel, 1100 New London Ave., Cranston.
