Nobel Prize Recipient. He shared the 1967 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with American scientists Haldan Keffer Hartline and George Wald for their discoveries involving the primary physiological and chemical visual processes in the eye. Born into a Swedish-speaking Finnish family, in 1927 he graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Helsinki. In 1940 he moved to Stockholm, Sweden and became a Swedish citizen following the Russian invasion of Finland during the Winter War. In 1946 he became professor of neurophysiology at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden and served in that position until his retirement in 1967. In 1960 he was elected a Foreign Member of the British Royal Society.
