George Cross Recipient. He received the award in November 1942 for "great gallantry and devotion to duty" while serving as a sub-lieutenant in the Royal Australian Naval Volunteer Force, Rendering Mines Section, in the diffusion of German mines in England during World War II. He emigrated with his family to Australia as a young boy and was appointed a sub-lieutenant in the Royal Australian Naval Volunteer Reserve (RANVR) in September 1940. and was sent to England where he trained at HMS King Alfred in Sussex and joined the Rendering Mines Safe section. in March 1941 he was posted to HMS Vernon for duties and further training in mine disposal. In November 1945 he was discharged from duty, and he returned to Australia where he became chief architect for the New South Wales Housing Commission in 1950. His other honors include the George Medal and the King's Commendation for Brave Conduct.
