Thomas Warburton Jones, the eldest son of Rev. John Cargill Jones and the former Miss Mary Ann Walker, was born in Brunswick County, Virginia on July 28th 1829. Young Thomas was the grandson of Capt. John and Lucy Binns (née Cargill) Jones (a soldier of the Revolution), and Edward and Mary (née Warburton) Walker, the great-grandson of Col. John Jones, of Brunswick county, a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses, 1772 to 1775, and president of the Virginia senate, 1787-1788, the great-great-grandson of John Jones, son of Peter Jones, the founder of Petersburg, Va. The Jones family were prominent in Prince George and Brunswick counties, while the Walkers and Warburtons resided at Williamsburg, Virginia.

Thomas' father, a Baptist minister, later moved the family to Wilcox County, Alabama when he was about 15 years of age. Thomas having been primarily educated in Virginia, returned and attended the University of Virginia 1849 through 1850; obtaining a degree in medicine.

While attending UVA, Thomas kept an autograph book; which is now held in the Special Collection Section of the University of Virginia Library in Charlottesville, Virginia. In this book there are entries from his fellow students and friends, as well as a poem by his elder sister, Lucy Cargill Jones Matheson, entitled "Loved at Home" expressing how much his family loved him.

On January 6th 1853, Dr. Thomas W. Jones married Miss Thyrza Jane Alston, daughter of U.S. Congressman William Jeffreys Alston; who was known for her beauty. This union had one known child:
Mary Jane "Minnie" {m. Boykin} (1854-1929)

Dr. Thomas W. Jones departed this life at the age of 26 years in September 1855. His Last Will & Testament was signed on the 20th of July 1855 and Probated on the 15th of September 1855; making his beloved wife, Jane, Executor.
