First President of Ecuador. He served in the position on two occasions: first, from September 22, 1830 to September 10, 1834 and second, from February 1, 1839 to March 6, 1845. Prior to becoming president, he had received little education being from a poor family. He joined the military at age 15. He quickly rose through the ranks serving under Simon Bolivar in the Patriots Army. His outstanding heroism and military talents earned him the rank of general in 1824. He then became intendant of Quito. He retained the position until 1830, extending his authority over all of present-day Ecuador. On May 13, 1830 he organized an assembly in Quito and declared the independence of Ecuador. A few months later, at the age of 29, he was elected first president. Amidst an array of internal strife, he is best remembered as the founder of the republic. Most of his efforts were devoted to organizing the new government. His next term was more peaceful. He was eventually overthrown by Vicente Ramón Roca, the man who became the next president of Ecuador.
