Roman Catholic Cardinal. La Pola de Gordón born Gregorio María Aguirre García frequented the seminary of León before entering the Order of Franciscan Friars Minor Discalced of Alcántara at their college of Pastrana in May 1856. Taking his vows the following year, he was ordained priest in September 1859 by Cardinal Cirilo de Alameda y Brea OFM., and was soon appointed to the teaching staff and rectorship of several theological colleges of his Order across Spain and the Philippines, including those of Consuegra, Pastrana, Almagro and Puebla de Montalbán. Named perpetual lector of theology and canon law as well as honorary definitor of his Order and penitentiary of Patriarchal Lateran Basilica of Rome in 1884, which office he never took officially possession of, elected bishop of the diocese of Lugo, he received his episcopal consecration on June 21, 1885 at the church of San Fernando of the Piarist Fathers in Madrid from Msgr. Mariano Rampolla del Tindaro. Senator of the Spanish kingdom from 1893 until 1895 and anew between 1902 and his death, promoted to metropolitan see of Burgos on May 21, 1894, Pope Pius X created him cardinal priest in the consistory of April 15, 1907 with the title of San Giovanni a Porta Latina. Transferred to primatial see of Toledo and patriarchate of the West Indies on April 29, 1909, upon his death, as a good Franciscan, the Cardinal willed all his goods to the poor, but as it soon emerged, there was actually little to be done, for he died so poor that barely anything was found suitable for auctioning, of which profits were aimed for charitable means. Throughout his episcopate he sought to defend staunchly the faith across turbulent times, while his humility, discretion and especially his particular spirit of poverty and charity with those in need, was something that caught the eye of many a person. His remains lie at rest inside the metropolitan cathedral of Toledo.
