15th President of Guatemala. He served from March 15, 1892 to February 8, 1898. Prior to becoming president he started his political career while his uncle, Justo Rufino Barrios, was still President of Guatemala. A moderate of Guatemala's Liberal Party, he worked to complete the less controversial of the reforms of his uncle. He was also a division general in the military. He is best remembered for the construction of the Northern Railway, a monument to Christopher Columbus, freedom of the Press and promoting construction of railways, roads, and telegraphs. After his re-election, he was concerned with the culture of Guatemala and many new buildings were constructed in the capital along with new parks and a makeover of the city to resemble Paris. He also brought in several theater companies. On his way to a play, he was assassinated by Edgar Zollinger, a British citizen of Swiss origin who was stationed in Guatemala. Zollinger was then beaten to death by the police.
