12th President of Guatemala. He served from June 4, 1873 to April 2, 1885. Prior to becoming president he was a lawyer and then served in the military reaching the rank of general. After becoming president, he was known for his liberal reforms and his attempts to reunite Central America. He is best remembered controlling the aristocracy; confiscating church property; establishing civil marriage and divorce; improving education; building highways, railroads, and telegraph lines; promoting the growing of coffee as the basis for agriculture; and implementing a new constitution in 1876. He was constantly meddling in the affairs of the other Central American countries trying to restore the Five-nation Federation that had collapsed in 1838. When persuasion failed, he attempted to bring about unification by force. He invaded El Salvador in 1885. Leading his army in the charge, he died during the the Battle of Chalchuapa, after being shot in the heart and falling from his horse.
