Statesman, President of Guatemala. He served from 29 June 1871 to 4 June 1873. Prior to becoming president His family moved to Guatemala when he was a young. He then toured Europe and the United States. He completed his education in London. He returned to Guatemala and joined the military and became involved in national politics. He was a major figure in several uprisings against the government. In 1871 he and Justo Rufino Barrios overthrew President Vicente Cerna. He then became president. He is best remembered for initiating reforms of the former government. He emphasized education and the arts. He began a period of liberal dominance that extended nearly unbroken to 1944. After stabilizing the government he passed control to Barrios. He then retired from public life to write articles about his activities as leader of the revolutionary forces and as president for numerous Guatemalan publications.
