After the war he left the USA for Egypt and discovered the Semliki R. one of the Nile's tributaries. He became an official in the Kafhir's Egyptian government and negotiated a Treaty with Sudan. He married Sophia Flanagan Hurry Shreve Nov 22, 1890 in Cairo, Egypt. She died in Berlin in 1904. They had no children.
