Violet de Trafford was born on 17 June 1926. She is the daughter of Sir Humphrey Edmund de Trafford, 4th Bt. and Hon. Cynthia Hilda Evelyn Cadogan. She married Sir John William Maxwell Aitken, 2nd Bt., son of Sir William Maxwell Aitken, 1st Lord Beaverbrook and Gladys Henderson Drury, on 1 January 1951. She held the office of Chancellor of New Brunswick between 1981 and 1992. She was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Lawby University of New Brunswick, New Brunswick, Canada, in 1990. She lived in 1999 at Mickleham Downs House, Dorking, Surrey, England.

She was the first female chancellor of the University of New Brunswick, a post she held for 10 years.
She was on the board of the Beaverbrook Foundation and the driving force behind many of the foundation's key projects.
She was one of New Brunswick's most ardent ambassadors, a mother of two children — the current Lord Beaverbrook, Maxwell Aitken, and Laura Levi — and grandmother and great-grandmother of many more.
And yes, as noted by Powerboat Racing World, she was also a fiercely competitive powerboat racer.
