Swiss aristocrat and motor racing driver. Born in Paris. Winner of the 1949 British Grand Prix at Silverstone in a Maserati 4CLT. Baron Emmanuel 'Toulo' de Graffenried began racing in the early 1930s when he drove his own 1.5 litre Maserati in national events and Berne's Bremgarten circuit, and later he began to race abroad. After WW2 he teamed up with Prince Bira. Maserati was a manufacturer he remained faithful to throughout his career with the exception of three races in an Alfa Romeo 158 during the summer of 1951. The F1 World Championships began in 1950 and in 1953 he scored his best ever result with a 4th place at the Belgian GP at Spa. His career came to a close after the 1956 Italian GP at Monza. He owned a successful garage in Lausanne selling Alfa Romeos, Rolls Royces and Ferraris. He was Honorary President of the British Racing Drivers Club and co-founder of the Club International des Anciens Pilotes de Grand Prix. He died at Lonay-Lausanne, Switzerland.
