(The Rock Island Argus - April 8, 1920)

Herbert Avery, 50 years old, an employe on the Rock Island arsenal for 20 years, fell dead while on his way to work early this morning. He was about to take an arsenal car on Fourteenth avenue and Thirtieth street when his death occurred. He was carried by fellow workmen to his home, 1507 Twenty-ninth-and-a-half street and later the remains were brought to the Knox mortuary where an inquest will be held at 7 o'clock this evening. It is believed his death was due to a paralytic stroke.

Mr. Avery had been a zealous workman all his life and was popular among his fellows on the arsenal. Recently he had been promoted to safety engineer, a position of much responsibility.

Mr. Avery was born May 26, 1870, in Wakefield, Kan. He was married in Rock Island May 21, 1912, to Miss Edna Smith of this city, formerly employed in the offices of the Modern Woodman. In addition to the widow he is survived by one little daughter, Lois, the mother, Mrs. Orpha Avery, and a twin brother, Herman W. Avery, the latter of Wakefield, Kan.

Funeral arrangements will be made after the inquest.

(The Rock Island Argus - April 10, 1920)

Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home, 1507 Twenty-ninth-and-a-half street. The Rev. J. Clark Oranger, pastor of the First Baptist church, will officiate. Burial will be in Chippiannock cemetery.

Cerebral hemorrhage caused the death of Herbert Avery while running to catch an arsenal car early Thursday morning, according to the verdict which was returned by a coroner's jury which held an inquest over the body at the Knox mortuary.

Mr. Avery was on his way to work on the Rock Island arsenal where he had been employed for the last 20 years, when he fell dead.
