He was born July 6, 1844, in New York. He died July 3, 1910, in Trimble, Clinton Co.

John H. Allen was just 19, and living in Brandon, Buchanan Co., Iowa, when he enlisted as a Saddler in Co. H of the 7th Iowa Cavalry on June 1, 1863. He was mustered into federal service on June 19, 1863.

During his period of service, he was reduced to Private on Feb 1, 1865(Reduced to ranks), promoted to Corporal on Mar 1, 1865, promoted to Corporal on Jan 12, 1866.

He mustered out of the service on May 17, 1866, at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas.
