A native of Birmingham, Alabama, his nickname as a boy was "Hopy." He attended the University of Alabama, then served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He then studied art in Paris and Madrid, prior to returning to the United States to enroll at the Art Students League in Manhattan. He was truly a fine artist, especially of watercolors and a gifted and talented art director. He was a fifty-four-year resident of San Francisco and lived on Clay Street near Alta Plaza Park for many years. An openly gay man who was the quintessential "southern gentleman" and had many dear friends who miss his bright personality, sense of humor, generosity, kindness and his love of life to this day.
