Langdon Cheves Manly was the son of Governor Charles and Charity Manly. He attended the University of North Carolina receiving an A.B. in 1845 and an A.M. in 1849. On 18 May 1853 he married Mary Spann in Raleigh. They had nine children: Charles, Eleanor, Mary,
He was a physician. During the Civil War he served as a Captain in the 31st North Carolina Infantry Regiment from 4 Oct 1861 to 17 Sep 1862. He was imprisoned on 8 Sep 1862 in the Prisoner Camp on Roanoke Island and later released in a prisoner exchange.
