Sister Mary Genevieve Koslowski FSSJ

Sister Mary Genevieve Koslowski died peacefully on February 11, 2014 at 12:20 p.m. in the Colette Hilbert Care Community in the 82nd year of life and the 63rd year of religious life.

Katherine Koslowski was born on June 16, 1931 in Tewsburg, Massachusetts to the late Helen Koslowski. Sister Genevieve became a postulant of the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph on January 5, 1949 and professed her final vows on July 19, 1953.

Sister Genevieve received a Bachelor degree in Elementary Education from Marywood College in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

For forty-one years, Sister Genevieve ministered in the field of education at Holy Cross, Fall River, MA; St. Francis, Bessemer, AL; Mater Dolorosa, Holyoke, MA; St. Vincent, North Evans, NY; Our Lady Queen of Angels, Detroit, MI; St. Sebastian, Dearborn Heights, MI; Kolbe School, Baltimore, MD; and Sacred Heart, Danbury, CT. Over the course of her ministry, Sister also served as principal at St. Stanislaus, Chicopee, MA; St. Michael, Bridgeport, CT; St. Mary Queen of Angels, Swartz Creek, MI; and St. Stanislaus, Trenton, NJ and a school aide at St. Peter, Lewiston, NY. Upon her return to Immaculate Conception Convent, Sister Genevieve held various positions which included driving assignments, delivery of in-house mail and Minister of Food Service within the Motherhouse, and volunteering at Hilbert College. Beginning in June 2011, Sister Genevieve ministered as the coordinator of the newly formed Host Ministry Department.

Sister Genevieve may have been “small in stature” but she possessed a heart full of kindness, gentleness and compassion. Sister’s enthusiasm and cheerfulness were shared with her Sisters in community, from praying and sharing Scripture with the Sisters in the Care Community to being available as a driver, a sacristan, or sorting mail – any task where she was needed.

Sister Genevieve is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Charles Brown; her brother and sister-in-law, John and Dolores Shedd; and her brother-in-law, Benjamin Tieso. Sister is also survived by nieces and nephews, and grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Wake services will be held on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 from 3:00 – 6:30 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Convent, Hamburg, New York where a Memorial Prayer Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered in the convent Chapel on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be at St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Cheektowaga, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph in memory of Sister Genevieve.
