7th Prime Minister of Cuba. He served from 1948 to 1950. He also served as president of the Cuban Senate from 1950 to 1952. Prior to becoming prime minister, he founded the Student Revolutionary Directorate in 1930 which helped defeat the Machado regime. He was then forced into exile. He then led a workers' strike against the government of Fulgencio Batista and went into exile again in 1936. When he was able to return to Havana, he received his law degree from the University of Havana. In 1940 he was elected to Congress and in 1944 to the Senate, where he became majority leader. After Batista seized power again in 1952, was again forced into exile. With Castro's triumph in 1959, he returned to Cuba but soon turned against the regime. In 1960, he founded the Cuban Democratic Revolutionary Force, whose task was to help prepare for the Bay of Pigs invasion. In 1960 he once went into exile after denouncing Castro's communist regime. He was a member of the exile coalition Cuban Revolutionary Council from 1961 to 1964. He is best remembered as being the leading enemy of Fidel Castro and was prime minister in Cuba's last freely elected government working from exile in the United States for democracy in his homeland.
