May 28, 1949 - November 14, 2016

BIRTH: May 28, 1949, in La Puente, New Mexico, to Jose Dario and Manuelita Abeyta. He was their fourth child.

MOVE TO DELTA, COLORADO: Jose moved with his family from La Puente, New Mexico, to Delta, Colorado, in 1957.

EDUCATION: Attended school in Delta, Colorado, and graduated from Delta High School in 1967.

MILITARY: In 1969, Jose was drafted into the United States Army, where he received training as a fixed wing aircraft mechanic. Jose completed one tour in Vietnam before being honorably discharged in 1971.

MARRIAGE: May 1, 1971, Loretta Espinosa. They lived in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Two sons Lenny and Juan were born to them.

EMPLOYMENT AND COLLEGE: Worked full time and went to the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, where he earned a degree in sociology. After getting his degree, Jose worked as both a parole officer and a probation officer.

MOVE TO MONTROSE, COLORADO: In 1978, Jose and Loretta moved to Montrose, Colorado, where they were living at the time of his passing.

PROBATION OFFICER: In Montrose, Colorado, probation officer and chief probation officer for the 7th Judicial District.

MEMBER: committees and boards during his career.

MONTROSE CITY COUNCIL MEMBER AND MAYOR: In 2006, Jose was elected to the Montrose City Council, and in 2009, Jose became the Mayor of Montrose, Colorado.

PASTIMES AND INTERESTS: Working on his farm and raising his cattle and sheep. Helping people in need.

PRECEDED IN DEATH by parents Jose Dario and Manuelita Abeyta, and one brother Jose Dario Jr.

AMONG SURVIVORS: Wife of 45 years Loretta Abeyta, sons Lenny (Laura) Abeyta and Juan Abeyta, grandchildren Brittany and Joshua Abeyta and John Bailly, one sister Leontina (Leo) Covert, brothers Milton (Rosie) Abeyta, Robert (Carmen) Abeyta and Allen (Mary) Abeyta, nieces, nephews and Godchildren.

ROSARY AND VISITATION: 6PM, Thursday, November 17, 2016, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Montrose, Colorado.

FUNERAL MASS: 10AM, Friday, November 18, 2016, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

INTERMENT: Cedar Creek Cemetery.
