12th Governor-General of Australia. He served from 11 March 1947 to 8 May 1953. Prior to serving as governor-general, he worked at the docks as a boilermaker and then worked for the New South Wales Government Railways from 1913 to 1914. He then became a Member of the New South Wales Parliament where he would serve from 1917 to 1947. While in parliament he studied for the Bar and was admitted in 1925. He became the 27th Premier of New South Wales serving from 16 May 1941 to 6 February 1947. As premier, he achieved an impressive record in social, industrial, planning, and environmental areas. He then retired from politics, but was soon made governor- general. He was only the second Australian to be appointed governor-general. He is best remembered for his dignity, knowledge of affairs, and impartiality.
