MRS. HERRING

LARGO, Fla. — Mrs. Virginia (Wall) Herring, 82, wife of Dr. Hal M. Herring, went home to be with our Lord on Feb. 27, 2006.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Wiley and Katie Wall; and her son-in-law Robert Lee Ward, Sr.

Mrs. Herring was born on Feb. 23, 1924 in Troy, Ala. She later moved to Lanett, where she met the love of her life, her future husband Hal. She knew instantly that she would spend the rest of her life with him. They wed on July 22, 1942.

She earned an associate’s degree with honors from Macon Hospital Nursing School, where she was a member of Phi Theta Kappa Sorority. Mrs. Herring served in the Cadet Nursing Corp. from 1944 to 1947. She continued her life-long love of learning, and in 1998, at the age of 74, she graduated from DeKalb College with her oldest grandchild, Emily Ward Price.

Mrs. Herring was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. In addition to raising her five children, she supported her husband's football and teaching careers.

She and Hal retired to Tampa in 1997. She was a devout Christian, a member of First Baptist Church of Indian Rocks in Largo, and Dunwoody Baptist Church in Dunwoody, Ga. She was a woman of great compassion, strength, and grace. Mrs. Herring was known for her wonderful sense of humor, and was truly a friend to all.

Mrs. Herring is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 62 years, Dr. Hal M. Herring; her loving children, Dr. Tory (Cindy) Herring, of Birmingham, Ala.; Tim (Patti) Herring, of Atlanta; Hilda (Keith) Harding, of Oceanside, Calif; Helen Ward, of Cumming, Ga.; and Hala (Christopher) Carlton, of Largo. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Emily and Robbie Price, Robert Ward, Jennie and Chase Gee, Shane and Lamar Herring, Katie and Hal Herring, Shawn, Kathryn and Savannah Carlton; and by her great-grandchildren, Thomas and Helena Grace Price.

Memorial services will be held at the First Baptist Church of Indian Rocks, 12685 Ulmerton Road, Largo, at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 3.

A reception will follow at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the First Baptist Church of Indian Rocks or to the Woodward Academy, Atlanta.
