5th Prime Minister of Denmark. He served from October 18, 1856 to May 13, 1857 as Denmark's prime minister. Prior to becoming prime minister, he was professor of mathematics and mechanics at the national military college. He was elected to the Royal Danish Academy in 1853. He was also Speaker of the Danish Parliament from January 30, 1850 to August 3, 1852 and Finance Minister of Denmark from December 12, 1854 to July 10, 1858. He is best remembered for inventing the system of what is now called the single transferable vote (STV), which was used in Danish elections from 1855. It is still used in many countries today including some jurisdictions in the United States. After being replaced as prime minister, he stayed on the sidelines not becoming involved in politics.
