John petitioned for a land grant in 1792. It was signed by James McGill in Montreal. He did not settle in Tewkesbury. Reverend Twoosy and Chenelm Chandler of the Royal artillery were instrumental in procuring the land grant for the soldiers. However both died in 1798 and 1802 respectively, perhaps affecting the clearing and the development of the land- maybe why John Hartell chose to remain in Montreal and work as a Blacksmith. However, 3 of his daughters met and married men from Quebec City., with Ann Austin Hartell marrying Thomas Brown(a shipwright from Hexham, Northumberland), and settling in Valcartier, Quebec.
