Politician in the German Empire, and Weimar Republic. He was a member of the Catholic Centre Party, member of the Reichstag, and minister of finance of Germany from 1919 to 1920. Considered a traitor by some radical political factions, he was assassinated by members of the ultra-nationalist death squad "Organisation Consul" (created and headed by Hermann Ehrhardt) for his signing of the ceasefire agreement of Compiègne in 1918. His assassins were later smuggled into Hungary and escaped prosecution, until after World War II.
