Brazilian lawyer, businessman, and athlete. He served as the seventh President of FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) from 1974 to 1998. His presidency is the second longest in FIFA's history, behind that of Jules Rimet. He also served as a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) from 1963 to 2011. He interested in sports since he was a child and at the age of 20 he competed as a swimmer at the 1936 Berlin olympic games, and as part of the Brazilian water polo team at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki. He died in Rio de Janeiro at the age of 100. The stadium for the athletics competitions at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics carries his name.
