A GRETNA GREEN AFFAIR
———
Miss Annie Edmonde of Pensacola Elopes with N. (sic) T. Meriwether of Montgomery.
Montgomery, Ala., July 20.—When the sleeper from Pensacola arrived here this morning a well dressed young couple were seen to get off and go up Commerce street to the front of the Moses building, where they took a hack and drove out Madison Avenue.
The other passengers on the train reported that the conduct of the couple was such that it was believed to be a Gretna Green affair.
Upon inquiry at the probate office the fact was ascertained that license had been applied for, but refused on account of a telegram from the young lady's uncle stating that she was under age.
Later that day she made affidavit as to her age, the license was granted and they were married at the court house.
The young lady was Miss Annie Esmonde, of Pensacola, and her happy husband is Mr. N. T. Meriwether, of this city.
