Edith Joy Overton Holmes, 92, of Jackson, Mississippi, went home to be with her Lord Jesus Christ on Saturday morning June 18, 2016.

Joy was born in Jackson on October 2, 1923 to Dr. Clayton and Edith Overton. She graduated from Central High School and Bob Jones College and later graduated from Chicago Art Institute.

Joy met Edward Hay Holmes of Philadelphia, PA, at Bob Jones College and they married in 1943. They had three children; Cathy, John and Clayton. Joy was an awarded, well-respected and prolific water color artist for more than 50 years and a member of the prestigious Mississippi Water Color Society. She painted thousands of paintings including many portraits of her family and friends from her home art studio. Much of her artwork is currently displayed in homes and galleries around the Jackson area. Joy taught girls Sunday school at First Baptist Church in Jackson for 25 years where she was known for her flannel board and other teaching aids. She was an historian and active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the John Birch Society.

Joy is survived by her children, John O. Holmes and E. Clayton and Kathleen Holmes; and her grandson, Clayton J. Holmes all of Houston, Texas and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins as well as childhood and lifetime friends. She was predeceased by Edward Hay Holmes and Cathy Holmes.

Memorial services will be held at Parkway Funeral Home on Thursday June 23, 2016 at 6:00pm with visitation held prior from 5:00pm - 6:00pm.
