The death of Mr. John Allison, the venerable father of Senator Wm. B. Allison, occurred yesterday morning at 2 o’clock near the family residence near Peosta station, in this county. He had been lingering for several weeks with no particular ailment, and for the last two or three days his condition had somewhat changed, it was thought, for the better, but a change for the worse took place Friday night and he died at the hour above mentioned. His sons, Wm. B. and James H. were at his bedside when he breathed his last. Senator Allison was in Washington when his father was first taken ill and arrived home in response to a telegram announcing his father’s dangerous condition. The senator spent the last three days at the bedside and had faith in his father’s ability to survive for at least three weeks longer. He had a wonderful vitality, he said, due to exemplary habits, including total absence from intoxicating liquors and tobacco in all forms.

Having attained the ripe age of 85 years, more than the allotted time of the human family, his recovery was extremely doubtful. John Allison was born in Pennsylvania in 1798, and was one of the pioneers of Wayne County, Ohio. Here he married Miss Margaret Williams, who died in 1861. In 1865, he removed to Dubuque County, and his declining years were spent with his son James H., who has a farm of 302 acres in Vernon Township. The only other surviving member of the family is Senator Allison.

Everything that was possible for the comfort and care of the aged man was bestowed upon him, and in his last days on earth he received the consoling influence of a dutiful son. Among his neighbors and friends he was highly respected, both for his wise counseling and his excellent and manly traits of character. A good man has gone to meet the reward of the just in a brighter and happier home beyond the grave.

Senator Allison came in from Peosta yesterday morning to arrange for the funeral, which will take place tomorrow afternoon. The remains will be encased in a metallic casket and the funeral will be in charge of undertaker Hoffmann. Services will take place at the family residence in Peosta in the morning. The noon train from the west will bring the remains to this city and they will be interred in Linwood Cemetery.
