Richard was born Rutkowski. His biological father's name was John Joseph Rutkowski and his mother was Mary Frances Rutkowski. Mary married Taft Bernard Boyk. Taft adopted Richard and changed his last name to Boyk on July 13, 1945 in the County of Wayne, Michigan. He attended Sacred Heart High School in Dearborn Michigan for 4 years, graduating in 1946. He enlisted into the army during active service on July 23, 1946. He served in World War II. He was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal Japan for serving 30 or more consecutive days of duty in one of the occupied territories after World War II. The medal was created in the aftermath of the Second World War to recognize those who had performed occupation service in Germany, Italy, Austria, or Japan. He served in Korea during peacetime as a Military Policeman with the 31st Field Artillery Battalion. He was military qualified to carry a M-1 MKM Rifle. He patrolled towns, roads, off limit areas and dance halls enforcing military and civil laws. He was also awarded the World War II Victory medal. He separated from service with an Honorable Discharge as a Private First Class on November 19, 1947 at Fort Lawton, Washington. He met Rose Murphy, the love of his life and they moved to Southern California. Rose had a son named Richard John Murphy. Dick helped Rose raise Richard and they bonded over the years as father and son and were best friends. Dick was a devote Catholic and attended church every day. He was studying to be a Franciscan Monk. Dick loved woodworking. He made tables, book cases and music boxes. His woodworking shop was in his living room of his apartment. Rose, Dick and Richard attended St Monica's church in Santa Monica, CA. Richard had a lot of respect for his dad. He taught Richard a lot about life and they spent a lot of time together up to the day that he passed away from a brain tumor, the size of an orange. On his death certificate the cause of death is listed as immediate cause of death A. Glioblastoma Multiforme, months. Dick gave Richard his 1969 Green Nova that he cherishes to this day, May 2022.
